Are You Optimising for a Search Engine Your Students Have Already Left?

AI search is changing how prospective students discover universities. If your recruitment strategy still assumes they begin with Google and wait for email responses, you may be optimising for a journey that no longer exists.

I want to describe two students making the same decision.

The first opens Google, types “best MBA programs in the UK,” and clicks through a dozen university websites. She reads brochures, compares ranking tables, fills out inquiry forms, and waits for someone to email her back. This is the student your enrollment funnel was built for.

The second opens Claude and says: “I want an MBA with a strong finance specialisation, under £20,000 a year, with co-op placements and visa-friendly post-study work options. Compare my best five choices.” Fifteen seconds later, she has a shortlist. Your institution may or may not be on it. She will never visit your website to find out.

The first student is disappearing. The second is the norm. And most universities are still spending the bulk of their recruitment budget talking to the first one.

The uncomfortable truth about your website

Nearly half of all prospective students now use AI tools during their university search.1 That number has grown more than tenfold in two years.2 And with 92% of students in higher education already using generative AI in some form,3 there is no scenario in which this trend reverses.

But here is what makes this uncomfortable rather than merely interesting: AI does not read your website the way a human does. It does not see your hero image. It does not feel the emotional pull of your campus video. It does not care about your tagline.

AI reads your website the way a very impatient, very literal student would. It asks: does this page directly answer a specific question? Is the answer clear, structured, and complete?

If the answer is no, it moves on to a competitor whose page does answer it, or to a third-party source that may not even be accurate.

Most university websites were designed to inspire. They are built around brand narratives, aspirational language, and visual storytelling. While this works well for human visitors exploring an institution, it can be more challenging for AI systems that increasingly influence how prospective students discover and evaluate their options. 

What AI actually wants from your institution

When a student asks an AI about your university, the model is looking for specific, structured, answerable content. Not marketing copy, but information. The distinction matters.

Most will only seriously consider a small number of institutions surfaced early in their research journey.
